In Galicia, Spain, fuel began to be produced from worn-out masks and protective gloves and suits used by medical workers during the treatment of patients diagnosed with COVID-19.
All these products are made of plastic. This potentially hazardous waste is brought to a temperature of around 850 degrees Celsius, although it is usually sufficient to heat it to 400 degrees to turn it into fuel.
In just three weeks, more than 70 tons of medical waste associated with COVID-19 were collected in Galicia. The fuel obtained will be used for heating some rooms, as well as in heavy industry (for example, in the production of cement).
